Coach Jim Connolly

A Philadelphia area native, Coach Jim has over 8 years of experience coaching basketball at the NCAA Division II & III Levels. Highlights include working under the winningest active Division II Women's Basketball Coach in the country, Tom Shirley, before landing his first head coaching job in 2019 at Chestnut Hill College.

Coach Jim is a former NCAA collegiate basketball player himself, where he played four years at Philadelphia University, currently known as Thomas Jefferson University. He was coached by 2011 Naismith Hall of Fame inductee, Herb Magee, who finished his own coaching career with over 1,100 wins. 

Now located in Alexandria, VA. Coach Jim now focuses on individual player development and skill management for athletes that are serious about improving their game. His other areas of interest include NCAA rules and regulations, and helping athletes achieve their goals of playing basketball at the next level.

"Chestnut Hill College Head Women's Basketball Coach Jim Connolly has been named the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) 2021-22 Women's Basketball Coach of the Year.  Voting for the CACC Coach of the Year was done by the conference sports information directors.

In his third season, Connolly guided the Griffins to their first conference division championship in the program's Division II history, guiding the team to a school record 23 wins against just five losses.  Chestnut Hill's 16-2 record in CACC games is also the best in program history.  Connolly's CACC Coach of the Year honor is a first for a women's program at Chestnut Hill.

Professional Experience

Coach Jim started his journey as a men's assistant coach at Bryn Athyn College for one season, before pursuing an opportunity to join staff at his alma mater, Thomas Jefferson University. Under Head Coach Tom Shirley, the winningest active Division II Women's Basketball Coach in the country, he helped guide the program to win two championships and earn three NCAA tournament appearances during his time as an assistant. 


Coach Jim landed his first head coaching job at Chestnut Hill College in 2019, taking over a team that had won only 9 games the season prior. He was able to lead Chestnut Hill to its first ever NCAA tournament appearance, first ever playoff win, and programs first ever National Ranking, in only three seasons.  Coach Jim became the first Head Women's Basketball Coach at Chestnut Hill to be awarded CACC Coach of the Year.

Personal Experience

Coach Jim played four years of NCAA Division II basketball at Philadelphia University, now known as Thomas Jefferson University. He was a four year starter and 1500+ point scorer under 2011 Naismith Hall of Fame inductee Herb Magee. Coach Jim graduated in 2013 and went on to start his own coaching career. To this day he still holds program records.

On senior night, senior guard Jim Connolly nails a step-back three-pointer with 3.7 seconds left in regulation to give the Philadelphia University Rams a 74-73 win over the Chestnut Hill College Griffins on Feb. 26, 2013 in the Gallagher Center.
